Egg ornaments, anyone?

Here’s the pattern, courtesy of my friendly friend (and Easter Brunch hostess with the mostest), Suzanne!

Rnd 1: Ch 2, work 7 sc in 2nd ch from hook.  –OR–  Work 7 sc in a magic ring. (because I heart magic rings)
Rnd 2: Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next 6 sc – 13 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: 2 sc in each sc around – 26 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 4: Sc in next 10 sc, dc in next 2 sc, tr in next sc, 2 tr in next sc, tr in next sc, dc in next 2 sc, sc in next 9 sc, sl st in next sc. Fasten off.
Weave in ends and hang with ribbon.
For the first two Suzanne made, she did the egg shaping middle part (dcs and trs) of round 4 in round 3 instead, then did an sc around. She thinks it looks better with the dcs and trs in the last round. I haven’t tried the pattern yet,but I’m going to trust Suzanne’s awesomeness on this one.
Thanks for the pattern, Suzanne, and… Happy the Week After Easter, everyone!

An Upcycling Hostess Gift

28 Apr

It’s just a hemp market bag with some pink wool doubled up for color. It’s what’s *inside* that’s the coolest!

Can you guess what it is?

It’s a bit of lamp oil, complete with tiny glass wick attachments to turn an old bottle into an oil lamp!

super groovy!

Here’s a cute little Sake bottle-turned-lamp.

I just love upcycling, especially when it involves giving people presents and drinking tiny bottles of Sake! =)

An Unexpected Event

4 Apr

An unexpected death in the family had me road-tripping to Pittsburgh late last week (which is why you had no FPF…my apologies), and I only arrived back in DC a few minutes ago.  Since I forgot my camera (as usual), you’ll have to take my word that the following things actually happened:

1. I met  my new nephew, who, in case you were wondering, is UTTERLY awesome.

2. I said good-bye to an old friend by doing a shot of tequila with my moM, daD, brotheR, sister-in-laW, and Chibi. (Yeah, that’s right. My family ROCKS the grieving process).

3. I discovered something that should NEVER be repurposed — an empty weed killer bucket — and taught my 2.5 year old nephew a new phrase.  (“DO NOT REUSE THIS CONTAINER,” which, if you’re two and a half, sounds a lot like, “DOOO ROOoOSE TAINER.”)

4. I hugged some people I haven’t hugged in a long time, told them I missed them, and admired their brandy new almost finished house (and watched their little son lock himself in his closet about sixty thousand times).

5. I shot some coke cans all up, in the name of target practice, with my daD.

Sorry, Coke.

6. I renewed my love/hate relationship with the PA Turnpike.

I hate you, construction.

Here’s to Harvey, who once spent an hour trying to convince me I ought to be a professional beer taster – may the next phase of his journey be everything he hoped for and more.

Cupcakes, A Day Early!

2 Feb

So as it turns out I didn’t finish my custom order yesterday, which means you’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see how it turned out.  In the meanwhile, how about a cute little pattern for a cupcake applique?  Yes?  Yes?  Wellllll, okay.

I made this little bag for a friend who happens to LOVE cupcakes.  It was her birthday, and I needed something to put her gift, this awesome little necklace in, so I came up with this teeny thing:

the cutest little cupcake bag in all the land!

I didn’t keep track of the pattern for the bag – it’s just some BLO dc’s, really.  BUT THE CUPCAKE, oh, well, the cupcake looked like it was going to take ten minutes and ended up taking me all afternoon.  Those ratios are more difficult than they look, yo (though it may have had something to do with an extreme bout of insomnia on my part).  ANYWAY.  Here’s what to do:

1: ch 8

2: sc across, ch1, turn

3: sc-inc, 6 sc, sc-inc, ch1, turn

4: sc-dec, 6 sc, sc-dec, ch1, turn

5: sc-dec, 4sc, sc-dec, ch1, turn

6: sc-dec, 2sc, sc-dec, FO.

1: ch 5

2: turn, ch1, sc across x3, FO.

1: ch5, sl st to form a ring

2: sc however many you can fit to form a circle (6 or 8 ought to do it), FO.

Sew or Liquid Stitch all that jazz together, and… (say it with me now…  VOILA!)  Cupcake appliques for everyone!  Hooray!

Yeah, I use Hello Kitty lip gloss. Wanna make something of it?!?

P.S. Wow, someone really ought to refinish my vanity… that looks just AWFUL…

Why I Didn’t Crochet Yesterday

26 Jan

The sequence of events that lead to my not getting anything crocheted yesterday:

1. Husband asked me what my plans were for the day, to which I responded thusly:

“I will be avoiding the laundry, avoiding the pharmacy, avoiding the grocery store, avoiding taking out the trash, avoiding cleaning the bathrooms, and avoiding cleaning out my closets.  I will probably play Farmville.”

2. At about 9:45am (after having blogged, checked my e-mail, showered, emptied and re-loaded the dishwasher, mopped the kitchen (PRO TIP: Do not put the milk in your bowl before the cereal.  It won’t end well), cleaned out the cat box, taken the recycling out, and of course, farmed my little farm), I realized that AVOIDING chores takes more energy than actually DOING them, and decided to act.

3. I headed out, parked Princess Wendy half way between my two destinations (the pharmacy and the grocery), and began my adventure.

4. Nestled between the pharmacy and the grocery, a warm, cozy Subway stood patiently and watched me pass it by not once (from car to pharmacy), not twice (from pharmacy to grocery), not *three times* (from grocery to car, back to pharmacy), but a deleterious FOUR TIMES, and as I made my way back to Princess Wendy, prescription in hand, I caved.  Subway – you complete me.

5. So, Husband and I don’t drink soda.  Or pop.  It’s bad for us – full of sugar, and caffeine, and sugar, and caffeine, and sugar.  Actually, I honestly can’t remember the last thing I ate that had sugar in it at all.  So, I got a Diet Coke at Subway.  So, apparently I’m a sugar lightweight, cuz…

6…. An hour later, my house looked like this:

Can you see me waving?

7. Two hours later I had bagged EIGHT bags of clothing, coats, shoes, books, purses, and random household goods to be delivered to Goodwill.

See that black bag? Yeah, that's an ESPRIT bag. ROCK ON, 1980.

Oh, and this one, too:

that's a cat bed that all cats hate. it's also brand new. I hope someone at Goodwill can use it.

8.  Two hours and twenty minutes later the cat had a small melt down, circled the entire house eighty-seven times at super sonic speed, wore herself out, and fell asleep:

Why use a teeny little bed when I can have this whole big one all to myself?

9. By 4pm the bags were loaded in Princess Wendy, which was ELABORATE, because the bags were on the 10th floor, whereas Princess Wendy was at street level.  Go Go Gadget Workout!  And, as there was no way I was going to head into town at the beginning of rush hour, I came back upstairs, took out the trash, did some laundry, and cleaned the bathrooms while Nina slept off her crazy.

And THAT, my friends, is why there was no time to commit any hookery yesterday.  Melissa + Diet Coke = not so much with the sitting still.  I *did*, however, manage to whip up another version of Chibi’s handwarmers Monday night, so despite my lack of yarn consumption, I still got to spend the day wearing these, which by the end of the week will have a cute applique of some kind on them:

Husband says Handwarmers make me look tough.

I'm so tough I'm practically Mr. T. See that fist? OH YEAH.

Oh, BTW – if you’re interested in the pattern for these hand warmers, I’ll be posting it NEXT FRIDAY (2/4/11), so you’re almost done waiting!

New Year, New Look!

11 Jan

You’ve probably noticed by now that A Happy One’s got a brand spankin’ new look for the new year!  Here are some other changes you’ll be seeing in 2011:

1. I’ll be blogging more via Kevin, which means my typing skills are going to decrease dramatically when I use this *teeny, tiny* bluetooth keyboard (as evidenced by my dropped parenthesis on the Hand Warmer post… oops):

my fingers aren't that small, but it was so cute and squishy I just couldn't resist!

2.  I’ll be discontinuing the Rabbit Recipe series.  As it turns out, you people like to read about raw food *just* about as much as I like writing about it (which is to say, not at all).   You’re probably bored reading this right now, actually.  Maybe you should go microwave something – I hear it helps.  I’ll still be experimenting with my food intake (cuz I love it, yo yo you know yo), but unless I discover something ultra-awesome you probably won’t hear about it.  Are you still reading?  Wow, impressive!  Did you know that I don’t have a humidifier big enough to de-staticize my whole house?  Oh, it’s totally true!  Instead I’ve got the shower running incrementally throughout the day… I wonder if someone’s done a study about what’s more environmentally friendly – showers or humidifiers…  hmm…  Still with me?  Really?  Okay, well, anyway (gosh, I feel like Kelly from The Office right now), last night Husband and I organized a whole bunch of computer cables!  Oh yes, it was SO exciting.  We wound them up, put them in bags, labeled them, and stored them.  Oh man, you have NO IDEA how exciting it was.  After that we checked our e-mail and went to bed.  We got cold because the window was open, so some time in the middle of the night I got up and closed the window.  Then we got too hot.  After that, Husband’s alarm went off and we listened to NPR for awhile.  Then, we got up.  OKAY, stop.  This is hurting me.  Move on to bullet point #3.  Please?…

OMG, and then like, I totally had to put on lip gloss!

3. I *suppose* I could probably post a few more pictures of my awesome kitten (currently 15 wks), Nina Simone.  You just have to promise not to call me a cat lady, okay?

Nina nomming on her Christmas present

Okay.  That’s enough things.  Peace out, yo.  })i({
