I’m Back, and I <3 my daD!

18 Jun

Great news, friends!  My project is finally, FINALLY finished!  Since it’s a gift you’ll have to wait a bit to see; I don’t want to ruin the surprise.  T-minus two weeks until you can see the lovely pictures!

In the meanwhile I’ve been working on just a few things, including these:

how do you make crochet manly? Why, put some whiskey inside, of course!

For Father’s Day this year we got the dads (daD and Dadio, as they like to call themselves) some really awesome whiskey stones.

brown bow = totally manly, right?

And, since it seemed weird to get them whiskey stones without whiskey, we got Dadio a bottle of his favorite beverage and the daD a bottle of something new to try – honey whiskey (which, by the way, is DEEEEElicious)!

Dadio's whiskey pops its collar LIKE A BOSS.

Do you think the dads will forgive the girlie packaging?  I hope so.  =)

Happy Father’s Day to all you dads (and grandpas, and uncles, and soon-to-be dads, and you know, all of the awesome male role models floating around out there).  We love you!

Ninaberry

14 Apr

Not only does little Nina purr like it’s going out  of style when we feed her carrots,

I can haz carrots?

She’s apparently also really into strawberries, cuz while Husband, some friends and I enjoyed a bottle of buttery, delicious wine the other night,

With a label like that, it HAS to be good!

Little Miss Nina pilfered a strawberry from our snack stash and thoroughly nommed it.

nom nom nom

I’m beginning to think we’ve gone and adopted ourselves a vegetarian kitteh…

...maybe it's a squirrel flavored strawberry?

WIP it…

So, when I started this pattern, which will eventually be a light-weight spring shrug,

I HAD NO IDEA IT WAS MADE ENTIRELY OF SINGLE CROCHETS.

pretty, but time consuming.

Granted, they’re back post single crochets, so they’re, uhm, .00002 % more challenging than regular single crochets, but the lesson here, people, is this:

READ THE WHOLE PATTERN BEFORE YOU START THE PROJECT.  If you don’t, your coffee table will look like this forever

blarg.

And even though you work on it every night, the world will probably end before your shrug makes it to the 38 inch length your pattern calls for.

Just sayin.  *grin*

Granny What Now?

9 Feb

Did you know that there’s a difference between a Granny Triangle and a Granny Half-Square?

You did? Smarty Pants.  =)

For the rest of you, check this out:

Granny Half Square

Granny Half Squares are flat on the bottom and involve adding an extra dc into the first and last “granny group” of each row.  For a refresher course, check out my ridiculously awesome tutorial!

Granny Triangles, on the other hand, are worked without turning the piece, and have three distinct roundy edges (and yes, that’s the scientific term):

Granny Triangle

For an awesome Granny Triangle tutorial, check out Carina’s craft blog – she’s got pictures and everything!

Nina is extremely smart, as you may know, and was able to correctly identify the Granny Triangle on her first attempt!

Smartest. Kitten. Ever.

In case you were hoping for a kitten-less shot (though I can’t imagine why), here you go:

AND… in case you were hoping for a bit more humor in today’s post, I just want you all to know that WordPress recommended I tag Cloris Leachman, the United States, and Constellation Maps in this post.  Then, when I typed those three things, it updated my recommended tags to include Go Daddy and a related article about a Grannie attacking thug bikers (which I’ve included below).  WordPress ROCKS.

Free Pattern Friday: Fabulous Fingerless Gloves

4 Feb

The Wait is Over!  Print out this pattern, pop in a movie, and get hooking!  By the end of the evening you’ll have an awesomely cute set of Fabulous Fingerless Gloves, which means you won’t feel so bad for watching Coyote Ugly for the seventeenth time…

Ferabeth’s Fabulous Fingerless Gloves

You’ll need:  an “H” hook, a tapestry needle, and a skein of your favorite yarn (I had a skein of 185 yards and had plenty left over)

You’ll want: to put your cell phone somewhere close.  It sucks to have to un-snuggle from the couch and put down the hookery just to answer the phone.  It’s probably a telemarketer anyway.  Put the phone where you can see it so you can utilize caller ID, yo.

1: ch 24, sl st. to join (be careful not to twist your chain).

2: sc around

3-4: dc around in BACK LOOPS ONLY.  (You’ve just completed the cuff).

5-6: dc around in BLO. (2 rows)

7-11: dc around in BLO, dc-inc on last stitch (5 rows)

12: in BLO, dc-inc x4, 20 dc, skip the rest of the stitches, sl st to the 3rd stitch of the next row (you should be skipping a total of 8 stitches).

13: dc around in BLO.

14. dc around in BLO, FO.

***IF YOU WANT TO MAKE THESE BAD BOYS BIGGER (or smaller), just add or subtract stitches in the following places:

ROW 1:  start with 24 & keep track of how many you add or subtract.

ROW 12: complete as written until you get to the 20dc.  At this point, add or subtract your number from row one (for example, if I chained 30 instead of 24 in row one, I would add 6 to my 20dc for a total of 26dc).  Complete the rest of the row as written.

That’s it!  Super Easy, super awesome, super fabulous! (Did you say ‘Voila’?  Come on, say it.  Saaayyyy iiiiiit!)   Happy Hooking, everyone!

Free Pattern Friday: Granny Bag

14 Jan

There may or may not have been a post going around Facebook last week wherein people pledged to make hand made items for the first five people to comment on their post.  I may or may not have reposted this, thereby signing myself up for five surprise projects.  I may or may not be listening to NKOTB and wearing a side ponytail right now.  *Ahem.* Anyway.

I’ve had this in my Ravelry queue since, oh, I don’t know, October, and thought now would be the perfect time to give it a whirl:

...hangin' tough...

Isn’t it cute? To make one with a flap like this you’ll need to make:

-4 granny squares

-1 granny half-square

-a strap the length of your choice (I did a chain & then dc’d around both sides)

– a button or some velcro

It goes together quickly –  you can look at the pictures to see how to fold yours, then just start sewing!  I added a button closure to mine, and because Husband was very concerned that whoever gets this bag would need to carry tiny things, an inside pocket:

for to carry your teeny tiny things

The inside pocket is just a rectangular swatch of dc’s sewn in… easy peasy!

I suppose this is less of a pattern and more of a general idea, eh?  If you’re interested in more details, stop by these websites or send me a message!

New Year, New Look!

11 Jan

You’ve probably noticed by now that A Happy One’s got a brand spankin’ new look for the new year!  Here are some other changes you’ll be seeing in 2011:

1. I’ll be blogging more via Kevin, which means my typing skills are going to decrease dramatically when I use this *teeny, tiny* bluetooth keyboard (as evidenced by my dropped parenthesis on the Hand Warmer post… oops):

my fingers aren't that small, but it was so cute and squishy I just couldn't resist!

2.  I’ll be discontinuing the Rabbit Recipe series.  As it turns out, you people like to read about raw food *just* about as much as I like writing about it (which is to say, not at all).   You’re probably bored reading this right now, actually.  Maybe you should go microwave something – I hear it helps.  I’ll still be experimenting with my food intake (cuz I love it, yo yo you know yo), but unless I discover something ultra-awesome you probably won’t hear about it.  Are you still reading?  Wow, impressive!  Did you know that I don’t have a humidifier big enough to de-staticize my whole house?  Oh, it’s totally true!  Instead I’ve got the shower running incrementally throughout the day… I wonder if someone’s done a study about what’s more environmentally friendly – showers or humidifiers…  hmm…  Still with me?  Really?  Okay, well, anyway (gosh, I feel like Kelly from The Office right now), last night Husband and I organized a whole bunch of computer cables!  Oh yes, it was SO exciting.  We wound them up, put them in bags, labeled them, and stored them.  Oh man, you have NO IDEA how exciting it was.  After that we checked our e-mail and went to bed.  We got cold because the window was open, so some time in the middle of the night I got up and closed the window.  Then we got too hot.  After that, Husband’s alarm went off and we listened to NPR for awhile.  Then, we got up.  OKAY, stop.  This is hurting me.  Move on to bullet point #3.  Please?…

OMG, and then like, I totally had to put on lip gloss!

3. I *suppose* I could probably post a few more pictures of my awesome kitten (currently 15 wks), Nina Simone.  You just have to promise not to call me a cat lady, okay?

Nina nomming on her Christmas present

Okay.  That’s enough things.  Peace out, yo.  })i({
