Bookmarks, and also, I’m a big, fat nerd

30 Aug

I hate to waste things, especially yarn.  I also hate to weave ends in, so the thought of crocheting a big granny square with each round a different color frankly makes me a bit queasy.  Solution:  BOOKMARKS!  I whipped up these cute little things as a gift for a friend of mine, but liked them so much I made a few for myself, too!  They’re quick, easy, and chock full of warm fuzzies (and yes, that’s the book I’m currently reading. Don’t judge)!

Here’s the pattern for the flower bookmark:

You’ll need a teeny bit of scrap yarn & the smallest hook your yarn will allow.  The thinner the yarn, the flatter your bookmark will turn out.

Rnd 1: ch 6, sl st. to form a ring

Rnd 2: *ch 6, sl st. into ring* 6 times (this is the first row of petals)

Rnd 3: *ch 6, sl st. into PETAL* around. (second row of petals)

Rnd 4: ch 50

Rnd 5: count back 5 chains & sl st to form another ring.

Rnd 6: *ch 5, sl st. into ring* 5 times (this is the smaller flower at the bottom).  FO (weaving your tail up through the ch of 50 rather than the flower will add some stability to the bottom flower & help it lay flat).

ONCE you get the basic idea it’s super easy to customize these bad boys just by starting with a different applique & adding your ch. of 50 to it.  I tried a few stars & a basic amigurumi circle, and they both turned out great!  Here is the link to the star, plus a bigger link to CPC’s collection of free applique patterns:

If you try it, I’d love to see your finished products!  Happy Crocheting!

Oh, and keep those guesses coming for the penny game; the winner gets a gift certificate to my Etsy shop!  })i({

    I never use conventional books marks…mainly because if they are the least bit interesting my children will steal them and do random things with them (not including marking their place in books).

    They are, however, a great gift!

    I really like these! You could also add beads and such if you like.
